Overview
Telegram’s MTProto is the core protocol behind Telegram clients — not a REST API. OAuth-style authorization (phone + code).
Note (verified 2026-08):
core.telegram.org/apiserves the protocol docs (HTTP 200).
What it provides
MTProto — binary protocol over TLS (core.telegram.org/api)- Full client protocol: messages, calls, channels.
- Auth: phone number → code → session keys (OAuth-like flow).
Notes
- For bots use the Telegram Bot API (listed on this site) — simpler HTTP API.
- MTProto requires a Telegram-issued
api_id/api_hash.

Is MTProto free? Yes — free with api_id/api_hash.
What’s the difference from the Bot API? MTProto is the full client protocol; the Bot API is a simpler HTTP wrapper (listed).
