Overview

The arXiv API provides programmatic access to arXiv’s 2M+ preprints in physics, math, computer science, and more — search by query, list by category, and fetch paper metadata in Atom XML. Keyless, free, and the standard source for research feeds and paper trackers.

Verified 2026-08: the legacy http endpoint 301-redirects to https — use https://export.arxiv.org/api/query.

Search papers (verified live):

None — keyless.

Rate Limits & Notes

• Free; the API guidelines ask for no more than 1 request per 3 seconds and a descriptive User-Agent.
• Responses are Atom XML (not JSON) — parse the <entry> elements.
• Search syntax: all:, ti: (title), au: (author), cat: (category), abs: (abstract); combine with AND/OR.
• Sort via sortBy=submittedDate|relevance and sortOrder=ascending|descending.
