Overview

AniList’s API is a GraphQL service for anime and manga: search shows/manga, fetch characters, staff, studios, genres, airing schedules, and user lists — plus OAuth for reading/writing a user’s anime lists. The community’s favorite modern anime API.

Authentication (OAuth)

• Anonymous: queries work keyless (verified) — enough for search/browse apps.
• OAuth: register an app at anilist.co/settings/developer to get client id/secret; the authorization-code flow grants a token for user-scoped queries (Viewer { id }, list mutations).

Rate Limits & Notes

• Rate limit: 30 requests/minute (anonymously); 90/min with OAuth — cache aggressively.
• GraphQL only: one endpoint, POST with {"query": "..."}; use fragments and selection sets to keep payloads small.
• The API docs include a built-in GraphQL explorer (anilist.co/graphiql) — use it to build queries.
• Media IDs are stable and shared with the Media union (ANIME/MANGA).

Is AniList API free? Yes — GraphQL queries are free; anonymous limit is 30 req/min.

Do I need OAuth? Only for user-list features — browsing/searching works anonymously.
